Do you want a countertop surface that is durable, colorful and practical?
Engineered stone is a composite material comprised of minerals and resin. Most brands in the market today are comprised of quartz. Engineered stone is primarily used for countertops but can be used in showers, tub decks and other items.
Engineered stone is made by combining the aggregate with resin and pigments with a processss that binds the medium permanently. Because the mix is uniform, engineered stone has no fissures, veins, or other imperfections that could compromise the strength, like natural stone, or make it hard to match seams. It also means that your counter will match the sample -- no need to travel to the stone yard and sort through slabs.
Engineered stone products are gaining in popularity and are sometimes preferred over granite products. Engineered stone products require less maintenance than granite because they are non-porous. For example, they don't have to be sealed periodically. This non-porous surface provides more stain and bacterial resistance than granite and is NSF certified for food preparation areas.
Engineered stone comes in many colors and some also come with a pattern or veining effect -- some colors mimic natural stone; others are pastel hues straight off a designer's palette.
Engineered stone products are just slightly heavier than granite, but they are also less brittle so they are less likely to break and crack during transportation and installation.
